It's one of my pet peeves.
I mean, it looks pretty, but when it comes to actually reading the content, it's a bit like trying to walk your dogs on leads that keep tangling—frustrating and unnecessarily complicated!
When it comes to choosing text alignment, left justification often reigns supreme, especially in professional and digital settings. Here are a few reasons why left-justifying text is generally preferred over centre-justification:
Left-justified text creates a straight left edge, making it easier for the eyes to follow from line to line. This alignment mimics the natural way we read, providing a consistent starting point and reducing eye strain. It's especially beneficial for people with dyslexia, helping them navigate the text more easily. In fact, approximately 10% of the population in the UK has some form of dyslexia, and clear text alignment can make a significant difference in their reading experience. In contrast, centre-justified text can cause readers to struggle as they search for the beginning of each line, disrupting the reading flow.
Left-justified text tends to look more organised and polished. It's the standard for most professional documents, websites, and publications. This uniformity can enhance the credibility of your content, making it look more structured and easier to digest.
When you left justify text, it efficiently uses the available space on a page or screen. Centre justification can lead to awkward gaps and uneven white space, which can make the content appear fragmented and less cohesive. Proper space utilisation ensures that your content looks balanced and aesthetically pleasing.
Left-justified text is more compatible with screen readers, which are crucial for accessibility. These tools read text linearly, and a consistent starting point helps ensure that the content is conveyed correctly to users with visual impairments.
Maintaining a consistent formatting style throughout your document or website is important for a professional look. Left justification aligns with most formatting standards and expectations, providing a cohesive and seamless reading experience.
Just imagine reading your favourite novel—left-justified text ensures you stay immersed in the story or melody without unnecessary distractions. It's like a good walk with my dogs off the leads, where I enjoy a smooth, uninterrupted path rather than dodging obstacles!
Left justification is not just a matter of tradition; it's a practical choice that enhances readability, appearance, and accessibility. It ensures that your content is not only seen but also understood and appreciated in the best possible way.
